Belgodère

The history

Belgodère's origins date back to the Middle Ages. Its exceptional panorama and strategic location (with a direct view of the sea and therefore of potential attackers) led the Marquis of Massa (a powerful feudal lord) to fortify the village and make it his residence around 1268.

Over the centuries, Belgodère grew in importance, becoming the most densely populated part of the Toani and Paraso tracts. It was only logical that Paraso should become the canton of Belgodère at the end of the 18th century.

A stronghold in the Balagne region, Belgodère also attracted the attention of many, not least Fascist Italy, which occupied Corsica during the Second World War. Blockhouses, forts and turrets were built by Mussolini's troops at this time. A commemorative plaque, deposited by the American army, also appears on the site, attesting to the liberation of the Isle of Beauty in 1943.

In 1973, the canton of Belgodère was split, bringing together the former cantons of Muro and Olmi-Cappella.

The village

When the Marquis de Massa chose the name "Beau Plaisir" for this village, he couldn't have been closer to reality.

With its pretty arcaded houses offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, its main square inviting you to relax and unwind, and its incredible religious buildings from every era, Belgodère is a pleasure to behold!
